About this programme

What will I learn? The MA course in English Language Science invites students to consider language as a social, acquired, and historically grown phenomenon, whose complex structures and diverse communicative functions will be deciphered by using interdisciplinary theories and methods. In a basic interdisciplinary module and in their field of specialization (English and American Studies, German Studies, Linguistics (General Linguistics and Diachronic Linguistics), Romance Studies or Slavonic Studies) students will learn to reflect critically and to apply methods for the collection and analysis of data. The dialogue between the linguistic disciplines allows students not only to develop a deeper knowledge of the fields and methods, but also to practice solution-focused action both in team work and autonomously. What makes Salzburg so special as a place to study? The MA course in Language Studies at the department of English and American Studies is distinguished by its outstanding student-to-staff ratio and offers excellent teaching (awarded with the Excellence in Teaching Award of the University of Salzburg) in the fields of linguistics and language acquisition. Many of the department's lecturers are native speakers of English from the United States and Great Britain. We greatly emphasize the importance of combining current research with teaching and strive for practical relevance, especially in linguistic seminars and lectures dealing with print and online media, advertisements and journalism, but also with socio- and psycholinguistics and second language acquisition.
