About this programme

Industrial Design is a strategic, human-centred problem-solving process that drives innovation and business success while improving everyday life for individuals and communities. In this program, you’ll learn about research, concept development and prototype making, studying how people behave to better understand what their needs are, and applying empathy to design for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. You will collaborate with experts across engineering, business, manufacturing and marketing throughout the innovation cycle, learning to balance a product’s appearance, function and manufacturability, and to weigh its economic, social and environmental impact. You will also be encouraged to design sustainable products that last many generations, keeping in mind diverse cultures. Studying Industrial Design at OCAD U gives you the chance to learn theory and also take practical, creative hands-on courses, such as design and drawing, while building the strategic and collaborative skills you’ll need to work alongside engineers, business leaders and manufacturers throughout your career. Our approach to Industrial Design is empathetic, creative, collaborative and strategic. It is grounded in the lived experience of the people who use what you design; it transforms needs and opportunities into innovative, market-ready solutions; it is developed in partnership with experts across engineering, business, manufacturing and marketing; and it is always aimed at driving innovation, business success and a better quality of life.
