About this programme

Civil engineering is focused on the infrastructure that supports a society. For many people, this brings to mind the buildings, roads and bridges that make up our cities and transportation networks. But, importantly, it also includes critical infrastructure such as pipelines, sewage systems, embankments, foundations, dams, flood protection, breakwaters and drinking water treatment plants. Creative solutions are needed to ensure the sustainability of this natural and built environment in a changing world. You will start by learning the fundamentals associated with engineering science and mathematics, leading to more specialized courses in Structural, Geotechnical, Hydrotechnical and Environmental Engineering. This includes solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, material behaviour, soil strength, and water quality alongside a progression of design and professional skills. In your upper-year, you will choose from a wide variety of technical electives that will allow you to customize your learning path, including infrastructure rehabilitation, steel and concrete design, water and wastewater treatment, geotechnical and geoenvironmental design, and lakes and coastal processes. Civil Engineering is a hands-on discipline, with careers that are just as likely to place you at a project site as in an office. Our program reflects that diversity, with a collection of laboratory and design activities across all years that support the application, synthesis and evaluation of knowledge. This includes testing full-scale building components in our Structures Lab, studying waves in our Coastal En
