Build your voice through the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Writing at the University of Saskatchewan. Designed for emerging and committed writers, this program immerses you in creative and professional practice across genres while encouraging interdisciplinary exploration. You will refine your craft and produce a substantial thesis that reflects your artistic direction. Bring your ideas into focus through sustained creative practice and mentorship. Pursue bold storytelling grounded in a dynamic community that celebrates and advances the literary arts. The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Writing is a two-year, full-time program focused on developing students’ creative practice. Throughout the program, students complete a range of in-person workshop courses and devote significant time to their writing. In the second year, students produce a substantial creative thesis. This may take the form of a novel, a work of creative nonfiction, a play, or a collection of poems or short stories. Most students defend their thesis in late August or early September and convocate in the fall. In exceptional cases, a June defence may be approved. The program is deeply connected to Saskatchewan’s writing community. Students are paired with established writers whose styles and genres align with their projects, supporting individualized creative development.
