About this programme
Both the three-year and four-year Bachelor of Arts Degrees in English offer students a rich and broad understanding of literature: its writers and audiences, its pleasures and problems, its traditions and its transformations. With St. Mary’s University’s small class sizes, you’ll have the opportunity to exchange ideas in a comfortable, intimate academic atmosphere. A degree in English will help you to use language precisely and elegantly, both orally and in writing. The written word will become clearer to you as you practice responding confidently and analytically to the writers who have shaped English language and culture. Graduates from the Degree Program English program will develop strong skills in the following aspects: Effectively explain concepts and strategies in research papers to influence the reader; use vocabulary and rhetorical tactics to communicate with a wide audience and engage with different opinions and viewpoints. Understand how to use primary and secondary sources, sort information and generate new ideas, and incorporate an author’s/critic’s idea in your own research paper. Learn how to critically analyze complex texts, evaluate ideas and research, conduct literature reviews, identify and practice the conventions and research methods of literary studies. Reason logically, synthesize ideas and formulate questions to clarify a particular problem, topic or issue. A Bachelor of Arts in English can lead to careers in a variety of industries from marketing and business to journalism, research and publishing.
