About this programme
No need to look elsewhere! Offered jointly by the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts, through the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute, these multidisciplinary undergraduate programs are the only ones of their kind in Canada. Courses cover the theories of language acquisition, as well as second language learning and teaching and explore the interrelationships between language, culture and society. What's more, upon graduation, if you want to work as a second language teacher and you meet the admission requirements of the Faculty of Education, a limited number of places are reserved for you in our Teacher Education (BEd) program. Several graduate program options are also available. Requirements for this program have been modified. Please consult the 2024-2025 calendars for the previous requirements. Students admitted in second language teaching will be given priority in registration for second language teaching (DLS) courses. The electives may be replaced by a combination of a Minor, Microprogram(s) , and/or elective units. This course must be taken in French. All assignments and examinations must be presented or written in French. Three elective course units must be taken in lettres françaises (FRA), French studies (FRE) or in French as a second language (FLS) to be eligible to the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa at the intermediate/senior level and to teach French as a second language (in the English language schools of Ontario) as the first teaching option.
