About this programme
Think of the Honours program in mathematics as a more intensive major. If you are drawn to the beauty and power of mathematics, this competitive entry program will help you learn mathematics at a deeper level. As an Honours student, you take more courses at the advanced level, including a research-based course. In this course, you are guided by a faculty supervisor as you conduct independent research, write an Honours thesis and present an oral defence. The Honours program in mathematics is available to selected students in the Bachelor of Science. Courses in the discipline are one component of the requirements you need to graduate with Honours. Consult the Academic Calendar for the year you are accepted into the Honours program for a complete list of requirements. Eligible students are evaluated for acceptance into the program according to a number of criteria. Before you apply, you must meet general selection criteria for Honours disciplines in the Bachelor of Science. Not all students who meet the minimum criteria will be accepted into the program. Acceptance is based on academic performance, GPA, course experience and the availability of a suitable supervisor. Because the Honours program is an intensive course of study, involving a significant amount of one-on-one interaction with a faculty supervisor and access to departmental resources, a limited number of students are accepted into the program. Decisions made by the department regarding acceptance to this program are not subject to appeal.
