About this programme
Welcome to the UNBC English Department’s homepage! Our department is housed in the Faculty of Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, and Humanities (FISSSH), and we are proud to offer a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum. Our faculty members are well-published researchers who thrive on bringing our passion for literature and culture into the classroom. As teachers, we are dedicated to helping our students achieve their academic goals and develop the skills required to prepare them for a variety of successful careers in the professional world. The UNBC Department of English recognizes that racism, white supremacy, anti-semitism, Islamophobia, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, and many other systemic barriers to learning and career progression unfortunately exist in academia. As such, we place high value on learning, teaching, research, and service that work to expose, record, and address equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) issues in our disciplines and communities. The department is committed to creating safe spaces for students who face systemic barriers. The English Department brings in Visiting Writers and Scholars throughout the school year. Our prominent writers-in-residence have included Janet Rogers, Jeannette Armstrong, Denise Chong, Lorna Crozier, Maggie de Vries, Robert Kroetsch, Kathy Page, Eden Robinson, Aritha van Herk, Rudy Wiebe and visiting scholars like Dr. Jonathan Hart (University of Alberta) and Prof. Dr. Klaus Martens (Saarland University).
