About this programme
An artist needs versatile knowledge and skills to practice and develop his/her profession. Studies in the degree programme in Fine Arts assure the basis for skills and knowledge needed when working as a free artist. Society needs artists to maintain the basis for intellectual culture. Artistic creativity is the core of all artistic work but it also enables creating an atmosphere that encourages creativity for the whole society. Creativity is an enabler for several new working duties. Artists work as special experts in the continuously expanding visual field. They possess a special skill to articulate by means of pictures and yield significance to our intellectual cultural heritage and participate in critical discussion. Art has a duty to maintain mental well-being and increase social interaction and empathy. In addition, artists benefit from developing their communication competence and co-operative skills, which make multi-professional teamwork possible. Creative competence has also potential in developing novel working duties. Success in the work of a free artist requires constant reaction to the continuously changing operating environment but also being able to proactively change the field of Fine Arts oneself. The degree programme in Fine Arts includes both alternative professional studies (Sculpture, Painting, Graphics, Performance Art) and common basic studies. Common basic studies include theoretical subjects and a guided control of an artistic process in an annual Fine Arts seminar. Special attention is also paid to the artists´ project competence, working life skills and economic competence. Based on the basic skills acquired during the first academic year, the students choose professional studies from the beginning of the second academic year. The second and third year students can choose between two or three simultaneous study units. Each student can acquire artistic competence suitable to him/her and to meet his/her personal goals. More study units are allocated to study the techniques in Painting and Sculpture than to Graphics and Performance Art.
