About this programme
What competencies does the graduate have? The degree programme in environmental engineering provides students with extensive knowledge in environmental engineering. The programme provides you with a comprehensive approach to the professional field of environmental technology. You learn about the causes, consequences and prevention of environmental problems from local oil spills to global problems, such as climate change and microplastics in waters. The graduate is able to plan activities in a material- and resource-efficient way, taking also circular economy aspects into account. What kind of learning methods are used in the programme? Studying is practical and focuses only on the skills and needs of working life. Alongside theory teaching, a lot of learning takes place in laboratories. The courses mostly involve online learning. You only need to spend the second year of the studies in Mikkeli, Finland. That second year has a very strong practical orientation: you take samples and carry out analyses working with real-life cases using modern equipment. After the second year, the rest of your studies can be completed online. In addition, you have the opportunity to include exchange studies as part of your degree. This offers you a truly international degree, if you so wish. However, you can always complete your practical training and thesis in your home country or city. What kind of career opportunities does the graduate have? After graduation, you can work in different positions of environmental research, supervision, planning and management. You can solve, improve and increase recycling solutions for cities, or conduct investigations and mitigation actions in contaminated areas. Depending on the professional orientation and area of responsibility, the job title may be, for example, a consultant, quality manager, environmental advisor, environmental manager, environmental planning officer, environmental protection assistant, environmental supervisor, planning, research or development engineer, or project engineer.
