About this programme
Biomedical Sciences and Engineering combines engineering with life sciences Biomedical Sciences and Engineering programme combines engineering with life sciences. We need advanced monitoring devices, implants, and algorithms to deliver personalized healthcare for everyone. Biomedical Micro- and Nanodevices Biomedical Micro- and Nanodevices specialisation focuses on the design, fabrication, characterization, and application of micro- and nanoscale technologies for biomedical and healthcare applications, including microsensors, microactuators, microrobots, microfluidics, micro-optics, wireless power and signal transfer, and biosensors. The specialisation combines microsystems engineering with biomedical sciences, providing a unique interdisciplinary education in Finland. Students gain both theoretical understanding of microscale physics and practical skills in cleanroom microfabrication, microscopy, modelling, simulation, testing, and characterization of microdevices. Emphasis is placed on miniaturization as a key technological trend that enables more sustainable, efficient, and data-rich solutions. Graduates learn to develop and apply advanced technologies, including microfluidic chips, wearable and portable devices, organ-on-chip systems, and soft robotic structures. In this specialisation, you will learn to: Apply microscale physics in device design and operation. Design and develop micro- and nanoscale biomedical devices and systems. Model, simulate, characterize, and test these systems. Use microfabrication and cleanroom technologies. Integrate engineering solutions with biomedical and clinical applications. Apply principles of miniaturization and sustainable technology development. Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams spanning engineering, life sciences, and healthcare. Demonstrate critical thinking, innovation, and professionalism in research and development. Conduct research and innovation for industry, entrepreneurship, or doctoral studies. Adapt to emerging technologies through lifelong learning Career opportunities Graduates of this programme are prepared for careers in medical technology companies, healthcare innovation, biotechnology, diagnostics, and research organizations worldwide. They can contribute to the design, development, testing, and commercialization of advanced biomedical devices and systems, working closely with engineers, clinicians, and life scientists. The programme also provides a strong foundation for entrepreneurship, regulatory affairs, and technology consultancy within the healthcare sector. For those interested in research, it offers excellent preparation for doctoral studies and scientific careers. As the field continues to evolve rapidly, graduates are equipped with the adaptability and lifelong learning skills needed to succeed in emerging technology-driven roles. Collaboration Master's programme in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (MSc Tech) offers following specialisations: Medical Physics and Biomedical Instrumentation Biomedical Informatics Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Biomedical Micro- and Nanodevices Furthermore, we share part of our teaching with the Master’s programme in Biomedical Technology (MSc) which offers following specialisations: Biomedical Informatics (natural sciences) Cell Technology Molecular Biology
