About this programme

Not just keeping the lights on – but lighting the way to smarter future The electrification of the energy system and society at large is a critical strategy for addressing climate change. Increasing the integration of renewable energy sources along with the adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps, is essential for reducing fossil fuel carbon emissions and overall energy consumption. Significant investments and development efforts are currently underway worldwide in these areas. State-of-the-art research-based teaching The specialisation in Smart Grids develops systems thinking skills and provides students with a comprehensive range of technical design and analysis skills in electrical power engineering: Advanced energy storage solutions Renewable energy integration Grid automation and demand-response Data-driven optimization Our education is based on long-standing research in Smart Grids. Please see information about research groups in Electric power systems and Smart Grids, High voltage engineering, Power electronics and Electromechanics and some examples of recent research projects Energy community as a driver of electrified city (ECADEC) , Distributed automation for electricity grid and DER management (INGA) , Holistic Approach towards Empowerment of the DiGitalization of the Energy Ecosystem through adoption of IoT solutions (Hedge-IoT) , and Gridable . The Goal? To design and implement an intelligent energy system Smart grids are designed to enhance the effectiveness, stability and reliability of the electricity systems and to integrate distributed energy resources into system management. They are essential for increasing the share of renewable energy sources without compromising competitiveness and system security. Smart Grids (MSc Tech) is one of the engineering specialisations in the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering. Suitable backgrounds include Bachelor of Science (Technology) degrees in electrical power engineering, power electronics, electricity markets, energy management, renewable energy sources or similar.
