About this programme
The course lightens up the problemacy of materiality according to the title's question, and opens up neomaterialist and ecological thinking that is influential in contemporary art. It brings practical information about non-toxic, sustainable and environmentally friendly processes, and the phenomena that occur between science and art. The material in making art is examined e.g. from the starting points of care: the environment, working conditions, the artist and the use of time. Parts of the sessions take place in the printshop. The lecturers of the course are international and Finnish artists and researchers: Helen Mann (UK), Anne Louise Blicher (DK), Katve-Kaisa Kontturi, Martta Heikkilä, Florian Rothmayr (UK) ja Annu Vertanen. Based on the lecture notes, the students write a learning diary and after the lectures an essay text in which they reflect on the question of the course title. These can also be written in Finnish.
