About this programme

The Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology of the University of Eastern Finland responds to global challenges through its high-quality multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and education. The research in the Doctoral Programme in Science, Forestry and Technology (LUMETO) touches upon three of the four profile areas of the University of Eastern Finland, in particular, on “Environmental change and sustainable use of natural resources”, and also on “Ageing, lifestyles and health” and “Diversifying learning and interaction”. The aim of the doctoral programme is to provide doctoral researchers with the skills to create new expertise and solutions that can be used to respond to global challenges by critically and independently utilising the methods of scientific research. The doctoral degree provides the skills to work in demanding expert, development and research positions in universities, the business world and the public sector. To be awarded a doctoral degree, a doctoral researcher shall complete the doctoral studies, demonstrate independent and critical thinking in their field of research and prepare and publicly defend a doctoral dissertation. Alternatively, in the LUMETO doctoral programme it is possible to complete a licentiate degree, which requires the completion of a licentiate thesis. The languages of instruction in the doctoral programme are English or Finnish. The aim is for full-time doctoral researchers to complete their doctoral degrees in 3–4 years. Further information is available on the webpage of the LUMETO doctoral programme .
