About this programme
In a world shaped by conflict, migration, and rapid social change, understanding the cultural, political, and religious forces that influence societies has never been more important. East Slavic societies—Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus—have developed within the sphere of Orthodox Christianity, where religion continues to shape identities, values, cultures, and public life. Recent events, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have highlighted the need for experts who can interpret the complex dynamics of the region. The Bachelor’s Degree Programme in East Slavic Societies and Religion (ESSR) offers a unique combination of East Slavic language studies, cultural expertise, and theology. By bringing together perspectives from the humanities and theology, the programme explores the interaction of religion, society, language, and culture in contemporary East Slavic contexts. Students gain practical skills in Russian and Ukrainian, enabling them to access original sources and understand societies from within. Combined with multidisciplinary knowledge and intercultural competence, these skills prepare graduates for careers in education, public administration, international organisations, journalism, civil society, and other fields requiring expertise on East Slavic societies and religion.
