The objective of the study programme is to develop the students’ linguistic and communication capacities, their critical thinking and ability to interpret texts, thus offering future graduates a series of crucial competencies for the workforce, but also for their personal development. The mandatory courses follow the historical evolution of English and American literature (the Medieval and Renaissance English literature, the literature of the Enlightenment, the poetry of the 18th century and Romanticism, the literature of the Victorian Era, the English literature of the 20th century, contemporary English literature, American literature) and developing students’ knowledge of traditional linguistics (phonetics, lexicology, morphology, syntax, language history) and theoretical linguistics (formal semantics, generative grammar). In addition, there are a series of optional and practical courses that enable students to better understand the field of study and relate it to their own interests. The specialization can be combined with German as a segment B language. The department for German studies in Cluj-Napoca is internationally recognized, where courses are taught exclusively in German. Many different projects are carried out with students and scientific conferences are organized annually. The department also has its own publication series. Students are offered a number of scholarship opportunities. In addition, the work of the nine local lecturers is supported by guest lecturers from the DAAD and the OeAD.
