About this programme
In this course, students are trained to work with crime and safety issues in public places from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students gain a broad and critical knowledge of the diversity of current theoretical approaches, which situational methods are at hand and learn from the real life examples. The course welcomes students from urban planning, sociology/criminology, architecture and landscape design but also human geography, psychology and economics as well as practitioners from municipalities, county councils, private sector and crime prevention organizations and the police. Please note that Students not located in Sweden may have problems attending a course at KTH. You could meet obstacles if you're required to pay fees or if you do not have a Swedish Mobile BankID. Please note: all information from the Course syllabus is available on this page in an accessible format. In this course, the intersection of individuals’ age, gender, ethnic background and identity to create barriers and obstacles to safety is examined. Just as certain individuals and groups in society are more vulnerable to crime than others, certain places are more prone to crime than the rest of the city. Furthermore, the specific physical and social environmental characteristics of these locations in relation to criminal incidents is examined. In the course, more than three decades of theories on crime and environments is critically reviewed as a means of building knowledge to create more informed actions when planning for safe environments.
