About this programme

The course introduces Earth system models as a tool to understand climate processes and variability in past, present and future climate states through the analysis of model simulations. Through this course, students are introduced to the structure and scientific basis of Earth system models and their role in climate research. The course covers physical processes represented in models, major components of the climate system, and how the simulations are used to explore climate responses to different forcings across timescales. Students learn to analyse, interpret and critically assess model output, including evaluating simulated climate data in relation to research questions. Instruction includes lectures, exercises, seminars, and project work based on Earth system model simulation data such as CMIP and CORDEX databases. This course is aimed at master's level students who wish to deepen their knowledge of Earth system models and climate model simulations. This is an optional course within the Master's Programme in Polar Landscapes and Quaternary Climate . As a student you must be conscientious about clearly accounting for the material used in the texts that are submitted for examination. To use another person’s expressions or ideas without stating the source is plagiarism. To translate and/or change some words in someone else’s text and present it as your own is also a form of plagiarism. Plagiarism is considered cheating and if discovered in an exam or paper, the exam or paper will be failed immediately and disciplinary measures may be taken.
