About this programme
The course provides a historical understanding of Europe's changing self-image, from the civilizational thinking and nationalisms of the 19th century, through the conflicts and integration processes of the 20th century, to today's discussions about identity, borders, cultural heritage and political belonging. The goal is to develop a thorough knowledge of how the concept of Europe has been used and renegotiated in different historical contexts - and how these notions continue to influence contemporary political developments and societal debates. The course also aims to provide a historical understanding of the contemporary situation and its change from alliance-building and expansion of Europe to an emerging geographical world order that is once again reminiscent of the division of power during the empire-building era that began in the early 19th century. The course relates to several of the department's researchers' ongoing work on European environmental history, urban history, and conceptual history. To follow your passion.
