Software Development

About this programme

Software runs the modern world, from the apps on your phone to the systems behind every business, hospital and bank. Developers are the people who design and build it, and the demand for them keeps growing. This FdSc Software Development is a practical, quick way into that career, taking you from your first lines of code to building complete, tested, database-driven applications. Over two years you’ll learn to program with confidence, think your way through problems, and work the way professional teams do: object-oriented design, version control, testing and the full development lifecycle. You’ll work across the whole stack, from the front end to the server to the database, and you’ll get real hands-on experience with artificial intelligence, building, training, testing and deploying your own machine learning models rather than just reading about them. You’ll build a portfolio of real projects, earn a recognised UWE qualification, and come out ready to start work or move on to the full BSc (Hons), where a specialist AI module takes things further. You’ll study close to home in small, supportive classes at University Centre Weston, and the qualification you earn is awarded by the University of the West of England, Bristol. You get both things at once: a community that knows you and a degree that carries real weight. We review the programme and its modules regularly and may update them to keep up with the industry.
