About this programme
Graduate outcomes: Strathclyde ranked joint 1st in Scotland HESA Graduate Outcomes results 2026 Flexible degree: apply once and choose from 11 named degree routes at the end of Year 2 Explore how the immune system protects the body, how microorganisms cause disease and interact with their hosts, and how these processes shape infection, immunity and health. This degree combines immunology and microbiology with practical laboratory experience and research-led teaching to help you understand the mechanisms that shape human health throughout life. Immunology and microbiology help us understand how microorganisms affect health and disease, and how the immune system recognises and responds to them. Immunology explores how the immune system recognises and responds to infection, damaged or abnormal cells, supports tissue repair and pregnancy, and how inappropriate immune responses can contribute to conditions such as allergy and autoimmunity. Microbiology explores the lives of bacteria, viruses and fungi, including how they grow, cause disease and interact with their environment, as well as how beneficial microorganisms can be exploited in biotechnology. Studying immunology and microbiology together gives you a deeper understanding of infection and disease from complementary perspectives. You'll explore how microorganisms interact with the body and how the immune system recognises and responds to them. In infectious disease, for example, you can examine how pathogens cause disease, survive within the body and evade immune defences, alongside the immune mechanisms that detect
