Complete Student Knowledge Base

1. What Is an Apostille?

An Apostille is an official authentication issued by a country's designated authority to confirm the authenticity of the signature, seal or stamp on a public document.

Students usually need an Apostille when submitting Bangladeshi educational or other public documents to foreign universities, immigration authorities, embassies or government institutions.

Bangladesh joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2024, and the Convention entered into force for Bangladesh on 30 March 2025. Bangladesh began issuing electronic Apostilles (e-Apostilles) through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

An e-Apostille normally contains:

The document authentication details.

The issuing authority's information.

An official digital signature.

A unique verification number or QR code.

Foreign authorities can use these details to verify the authenticity of the Apostille.

2. Apostille vs. Notary vs. Attestation

Students should understand the difference between these terms.

Notarisation: A Notary Public certifies or notarises a document or signature according to the applicable legal procedure. Notarisation alone does not mean that a document has received an Apostille.

Attestation: An authorised institution verifies or certifies a document. Depending on the document type, this may involve the issuing authority, a controlling ministry or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Apostille: The designated competent authority issues an Apostille to authenticate the origin of a public document for international use under the Hague Apostille Convention.

Important: An Apostille does not confirm that the information written in a document is academically or legally correct. It authenticates the origin of the document.

3. Which Authority Issues Apostilles in Bangladesh?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Government of Bangladesh, is the designated Competent Authority for issuing Apostilles.

The application is submitted online through the government MyGov platform.

Official platforms:

MyGov: https://www.mygov.bd/

Bangladesh e-Apostille Directory: https://mofa-servicedirectory.apostille.mygov.bd/

Students should use the official government platforms rather than unofficial agents or third-party websites.
