1. Introduction
Students applying for international education may need to verify and authenticate their academic certificates and transcripts before submitting them to a foreign university, immigration authority or embassy.
Bangladesh has introduced an online e-Apostille system through the Government's MyGov platform. This system allows eligible public documents to be verified and authenticated through the relevant government authorities.
Depending on the document type, the verification process may involve:
The relevant Education Board.
The issuing university.
The Ministry of Education.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
The required process depends on the type of certificate, issuing institution and destination country.
Important: Certificate verification, attestation and apostille are related but different processes. Students should follow the exact instructions of their university and destination authority.
2. What Is Certificate Verification?
Certificate verification is the process of confirming that an academic certificate or transcript is genuine and was issued by the relevant educational institution or authority.
For example:
An SSC certificate may be verified by the relevant Education Board.
An HSC certificate may be verified by the relevant Education Board.
An Honours or Master's certificate may be verified by the issuing university.
Verification helps foreign universities and authorities confirm that the submitted academic documents are authentic.
3. What Is Attestation?
Attestation is the official confirmation of a document by an authorised institution or government authority.
In Bangladesh, educational documents may require verification and authentication by the relevant issuing authority and government departments before they can be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The required sequence depends on the document type.
4. What Is an Apostille?
An Apostille is an official authentication certificate used under the Hague Apostille Convention of 5 October 1961.
It simplifies the authentication of public documents for use in another country that recognises the Apostille Convention.
Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention on 29 July 2024. The country's e-Apostille system is operated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the MyGov platform.
An e-Apostille normally includes a unique verification number or QR code that allows the document's authenticity to be checked online.
Important: An Apostille authenticates the origin of a public document, such as the signature, seal or official capacity of the person who issued or certified it. It does not confirm that the academic qualification is equivalent to a foreign degree or guarantee admission or visa approval.
