Studying in United States: the essentials

01Intakes and Application Periods

The main intake is in the autumn, starting around August or September. EducationUSA (U.S. Department of State) says undergraduate applications are typically due between November and January for courses starting the following September.

Graduate deadlines and spring intakes vary by university, so students should check each institution.

02Tuition Fees and Scholarships

Fees vary widely by university and programme. For example, Arizona State University lists 2026/27 international base tuition of $39,062 for undergraduates and $30,348 for graduates, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign lists $42,248 to $53,078 in undergraduate tuition and fees for international students.

03Working While Studying

F-1 students may generally not work more than 20 hours per week on campus while school is in session, subject to applicable conditions.

04After Graduation

F-1 students may generally be eligible for up to 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) related to their field of study, with a further 24-month extension for eligible STEM degrees, subject to applicable conditions.

05Living Costs and Proof of Funds

For the I-20 and F-1 visa, each university sets the amount a student must show. For example, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign lists room and board of $20,218 for 12 months for 2027 graduate admits, and Arizona State University lists on-campus housing and meals of $18,819 for undergraduates and $21,087 for graduates for 2026/27.
