Studying in Canada: the essentials

01Intakes and Application Periods

Deadlines are set by each institution. For example, the University of Toronto lists 15 January 2027 as the application deadline for many full-time undergraduate programmes, for both international and domestic applicants, and recommends applying by 7 November.

02Tuition Fees and Scholarships

Statistics Canada reports that average tuition for international students in 2025/2026 is $41,746 a year for undergraduate programmes and $24,028 for graduate programmes. Fees vary by province, institution and programme.

03Working While Studying

Students may generally work off campus for up to 24 hours per week during regular school terms, and without an hour limit during scheduled breaks such as summer or winter holidays, subject to applicable conditions.

04After Graduation

Graduates may be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). For programmes of 8 months to under 2 years the permit may generally be issued for up to the length of the programme, programmes of 2 years or more may give 3 years, and master's graduates (programme of at least 8 months) may also receive 3 years.

05Living Costs and Proof of Funds

For a single student outside Quebec, proof of funds is currently set at CAN$23,448 per year, excluding tuition and travel, for applications made on or after 1 September 2026.
