About this programme
Archaeology explores human societies through the material traces people leave behind, from settlements and artifacts to landscapes and monuments. Archaeologists ask questions like what Pompeii's ruins reveal about everyday Roman life, why Maya cities were abandoned and what artifacts uncovered in Calgary can tell us about the people who lived here centuries ago. UCalgary's Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology combines the study of past peoples and cultures with hands-on investigation. As one of only a handful of universities in North America offering a dedicated Archaeology degree, you'll learn excavation, survey, documentation and artifact analysis through fieldwork, including recent archaeological research in Calgary's Edworthy Park. Archaeology graduates can build careers in archaeological consulting, cultural resource management, museums, government and heritage conservation. Cultural resource management is the largest employment sector for archaeology graduates in Canada, with archaeologists supporting projects across industries such as energy, transportation, construction and resource development. UCalgary also prepares students for careers with archaeological consulting firms in Western Canada and beyond. Explore ancient civilizations; 12,000 years of human history on the North American Plains; zooarchaeology, using animal remains to understand past societies; and geoarchaeology, applying scientific techniques to investigate archaeological sites.
