About this programme
We need geoscientists to help solve the problems that our planet is currently facing. Geological Scientists (or Geoscientists) study the planet Earth and its many different natural geological systems, including water, climate, minerals, rocks, soil, and energy resources. They investigate how Earth and other planet’s natural systems work today, how they operated in the recent and ancient past, and how we expect them to behave in the future. The key to the geology of rocky planets, the solar system and the galaxy may reside in the history of our own planet. Geoscientists play a critical role in helping society meet its needs for natural resources, including the search for metals, minerals, energy sources, fresh water, and fertile soil. They also help protect the public from natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and volcanic eruptions. Traditional areas of Earth sciences include geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and environmental geoscience. Subdisciplines include the study of earthquakes and other natural hazards, engineering geology, economic geology and mineral resource exploration, oil and gas exploration and development, structural geology, geochronology, volcanology, sedimentology, geobiology, and paleontology, among others. Discovery, development, and sustainability of water, mineral and energy resources as well as coping with climate change, human impact and natural hazards facing increasing global populations, all depend on a deep understanding of natural processes.
