About this programme
The course builds on topics introduced on the course Philosophy of Science: foundational topics 7.5 credits (previously: Philosophy of Science I) I, and on Theoretical Philosophy I 30 credits. It offers a closer look at some selected topics that play an important role in contemporary philosophy of science. Well in advance of the course start, an email is sent to all admitted students with information and instructions. Admitted students are expected to register themselves (online registration). More about course content: Among the topics discussed in the course is Bayesian confirmation theory. After the probabilistic framework of this theory has been introduced, attention is devoted to some of its applications. Some of the theory’s problems and limitations are explained and discussed. Another topic is abductive reasoning. Different perspectives on abduction are discussed, and the relationship between abduction and Bayesian confirmation is analyzed. Learning platform : Reading instructions, detailed course planning, etc. will be posted on the course's Canvas page. Admitted students who have activated their student account and have been registered for the course will automatically become participants on the course's Canvas page. For other information about the course (teaching method, expected learning outcomes, attendance requirements, examination method, grading scale, etc.), see the course syllabus.
