About this programme
Because of the Earth's rotation, the Coriolis force plays a dominant role in large-scale flow. When this force is balanced by the pressure gradient, the flow is almost parallel to curves of constant pressure (isobars). This is called geostrophic balance. Together with the temperature difference between the tropics and the polar regions, this explains how the mean wind varies with latitude. We also study deviations from geostrophic balance, especially in the boundary layer near the land or sea surface. Furthermore, we investigate large-scale waves in atmospheres, and how they contribute to the formation of low-pressure systems. Grading criteria, course literature and other material related to the course will be available on the course Athena-site, once you have registered for the course. To follow your passion.
