About this programme
Our sociology and criminology degree takes an in-depth approach to society and crime by focusing on issues such as class, ethnicity, identity, gender and inequality. Through this course in sociology and criminology, you'll explore how social structures and institutions shape the individual and society. You'll gain an understanding of crime and violence, crime policy and the relationship between social status and access to justice and rights. The course also explores how we define crime, how society deals with crime, and how the distinction between crime and deviance changes over time. Popular careers for our sociology and criminology graduates include criminal justice, public policy, education, youth work, social services, community work and policing. This course is being refreshed for 2027/8 building-in employability, real-world problem solving skills, and wellbeing initiatives for a future-focused learning experience. Modules shown are indicative topics and will be updated in Spring 2027. We continually review our modules to ensure they meet the evolving needs of students, employers, and professional bodies. We are currently reviewing the year 2 (level 5) and year 3 (level 6) modules for this programme; therefore, options may be subject to change. You will be taught by an experienced team of experts, which includes senior academics, and practitioners with industry experience. Trained postgraduate researchers may also contribute to seminar teaching with the module leader. Teaching is informed by our research and consultancy work.
