Studying in Finland: the essentials

01Intakes and Application Periods

The main intake for many bachelor's and master's programmes begins in autumn. Some programmes also offer spring admission.

Application periods vary by university and programme. Many autumn-intake programmes use the national joint application system, while others have separate application periods.

Students should check the official application calendar for their chosen programme.

02Tuition Fees and Scholarships

Non-EU/EEA students generally pay tuition fees for English-taught bachelor's and master's degree programmes. Fees commonly range from approximately €9,000 to €20,000 per academic year, depending on the institution and programme.

Some universities offer scholarships or tuition-fee waivers to eligible students. Scholarship availability and conditions vary.

Students must also budget for accommodation, food, transport, insurance and other living expenses.

03Working While Studying

Eligible international students with a student residence permit can generally work an average of up to 30 hours per week under Finland's student work rules, subject to applicable conditions.

Finding a job is not guaranteed, and knowledge of Finnish or Swedish may improve employment opportunities. Students should not rely entirely on part-time work to finance their studies.
