Studying in Italy: the essentials

01Intakes and Application Periods

Most Italian public universities have one main intake, starting in September or October. Non-EU applicants usually apply through several calls (rounds) between about November and July of the year before, and each call has its own window.

Many universities also require pre-enrolment on the national Universitaly portal after admission, before the student visa application.

02Tuition Fees and Scholarships

For example, Politecnico di Milano lists a maximum annual contribution of EUR 3,943.04 for 2026/27 (46 to 74 ECTS plan). Non-EU students admitted with a foreign first-level qualification and no scholarship generally pay the maximum.

03Working While Studying

A study residence permit generally allows subordinate work of no more than 20 hours a week, which can be cumulated over 52 weeks up to 1,040 hours a year.

04Living Costs and Proof of Funds

For 2026/27, Italian Embassy guidance lists EUR 10,179.85 as the means of subsistence a study-visa applicant must demonstrate.

05After Graduation

The Italian government's integration portal says the residence permit to look for work or start a business after completing a course of study lasts at least 9 and at most 12 months.
