Studying in Malta: the essentials

01Intakes and Application Periods

The University of Malta's academic year starts every October, with a smaller February intake. Non-EU applicants living outside the EU cannot apply for February and should apply for October.

For the University of Malta's October 2027 intake, the deadline for non-EU applicants who need a visa is 1 July 2027. MCAST took applications from international non-EU applicants not yet living in Malta from 2 February to 30 June 2026 for courses starting in October 2026.

02Tuition Fees and Scholarships

For example, the University of Malta lists total tuition of EUR 10,800 for non-EU nationals on its one-year MA in Contemporary Mediterranean Studies. Fees vary by course.

03Working While Studying

Higher-education students (MQRIC level 5 and above) may generally work up to 20 hours per week outside study time with a Jobsplus employment licence. The University of Malta states that non-EU full-time students may work a maximum of 20 hours per week after their first three months of study in Malta.

04After Graduation

Graduates may generally be able to stay in Malta after their studies to look for work, and an employment licence is needed to work. The length of this period varies between official sources, so students should check the current rules with the official source before applying.

05Living Costs and Proof of Funds

Identità's Central Visa Unit requires proof of financial means equal to at least 75% of Malta's national minimum wage for every month of study.
