Malta study visa from Dhaka: VFS Banani, 6 to 8 weeks and tracking
Last checked against official sources on
Malta's long-stay study visa takes a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks from Bangladesh, according to VFS Global's Bangladesh page 3. Malta's own Central Visa Unit says the extended process takes 6 to 8 weeks in total, with its vetting typically around 4 weeks 1. So apply early and do not book flights before you have the decision.
Where and who decides
Study is one of the long-stay (D) visa types that go through VFS Global's Visa Application Centre in Dhaka, booked online 23. Identità, Malta's identity agency, lists the Dhaka centre in Banani, open Sunday to Thursday, 09:00 to 14:00 2. The decision is made by the Central Visa Unit, called the CVU, inside Identità 2.
Fees
VFS charges a service fee of BDT 20,900 for the Extended service or BDT 13,935 for the Standard one 3. The study visa fee is EUR 150 (Extended) or EUR 100 (Standard), paid in euros when you book 3. Fees are not refunded if the visa is refused 3.
Documents
For the National Visa (long-stay, D visa) for study, Identità lists 1:
- the completed, signed application form
- a valid passport, shown as at least 3 months beyond the intended stay, or at least 8 months' validity, and not older than ten years
- one recent photo meeting ICAO standards
- travel medical insurance valid in Malta for the whole visa duration
- proof of accommodation for the first month
- evidence of enough money
- provisionally booked flight tickets
- the original Letter of Acceptance from the Maltese institution, with course details, duration, fees and proof of payment
- for full-time students, a letter from the institution stating the course
Tracking and appeals
The tracking page asks for the country where you submitted, your application reference number (given on your receipt) and your passport number 4. Identità does not list what the statuses mean 4. The VFS Bangladesh page links an online tracking tool and refers you to the Central Visa Unit helpdesk for status information 3.
If a visa is refused, you can appeal to the Immigration Appeals Board within 15 days of the final decision 1. Identità's student guideline could not be read, so no official list of refusal reasons is given here.
Short-stay numbers
Malta's consulate row in the European Commission data for this region is New Delhi, not Dhaka. These are short-stay Schengen (type C) visas, all purposes and all nationalities 5. In 2024 it had 4,203 applied for and 1,645 not issued, about 39% 5. In 2025 it had 8,587 applied for and 2,720 not issued, about 32% 5. They say nothing specific about Bangladeshi students.
Keep your VFS application reference number and passport number ready for the status check above.
