Malaysia student visa from Dhaka: VAL, VDR and the EMGS status search
Last checked against official sources on
You cannot apply for a Malaysian student visa by yourself at the High Commission. Your Malaysian institution applies first, and only after approval do you apply for the visa itself 12. A Bangladeshi citizen on a regular passport needs a visa to enter Malaysia 1.
The two stages
Stage one: the institution applies to EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) for your Visa Approval Letter, called the VAL 12. The Immigration Department of Malaysia decides, and the High Commission describes its decision as at its discretion and final 1.
Stage two: with the original VAL, you apply for a visa with reference, called the VDR, through an Authorised Visa Application Agency appointed by the Malaysian government. There is no direct submission to the High Commission 1. The High Commission of Malaysia in Dhaka issues the VDR once the Immigration Department approves 1. The High Commission gives dhaka@imi.gov.my for visa queries 1.
A social visit visa is for stays of no more than 30 days and does not allow study 1. Study needs the VDR 1. A single-entry visa is valid for three months from issue and becomes invalid once you enter 1. After arrival, you must complete a health screening at an EMGS-approved clinic within seven working days, and then the student pass sticker is issued 2.
What you bring to the visa stage
The High Commission lists 1:
- the original VAL from the Immigration Department through EMGS
- your original passport and a photocopy of the pages with your details, plus any previous passport
- the completed visa application form
- two passport-sized photos
- a flight ticket
- anything else the processing officer asks for
The fee for a Bangladesh passport is BDT 600 plus a RM 105 processing fee and the agency fee 1. An application can be rejected if it does not meet the full criteria, and the Immigration Department may ask for more documents or call you for an interview 1.
Checking and timing
EMGS has a student visa application status search. It asks for your travel document number, your nationality, and a tick to accept its terms and privacy policy 3. EMGS says you can also check in its EMGS Hub mobile app 2. The search page does not show status labels until you submit a search, and EMGS does not publish the meaning of each stage on the pages read 3.
EMGS states 14 working days for a Malaysian student visa, but the same page has a comparison table that conflicts with it, so treat 14 days as a rough guide only 2.
Have your passport number and nationality ready when you use the EMGS search through the status check above.
