Timor-Leste student visa: US$50 temporary stay visa and its documents
Last checked against official sources on
The Migration Service of Timor-Leste offers a Student Temporary Stay Visa, valid for the study period and extendable for six months 1. The fee for the initial application and for any extension is US$50, paid in cash when applying 1.
The documents listed are 1:
- a completed, signed application form 1
- a valid travel document and a copy 1
- a 3x4 cm colour photo on a plain background 1
- proof of means of subsistence 1
- a return ticket or other means of departure 1
- evidence of accommodation 1
- a declaration from the school or university 1
- a medical certificate confirming good health 1
- a criminal record from the country of origin and any country lived in for more than one year 1
Student visa holders may be allowed to work part-time under terms the Government regulates, so it is not automatic 1.
An extension takes up to 30 days, in person at Migration Service Headquarters in Dili 1. Apply at least 15 days before expiry to suspend the count of validity 1. No time is stated for initial applications 1.
The visa-exemptions page names Schengen citizens (UK and Ireland excluded) and ASEAN citizens from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand 2. It does not mention Bangladesh, and says other bilateral waivers are being negotiated but are not yet in force 2. For tourist visas, the Service says they may be obtained on arrival where the criteria are met, or applied for beforehand at a Timor-Leste embassy or consulate abroad 3. The on-arrival tourist visa is single entry for 30 days and costs US$30 in cash 4.
The pages do not say where a Bangladeshi student lodges the first student visa application, and no Timor-Leste mission for Bangladesh is confirmed. The Migration Service decides 3; ask it before travelling.
The status check above links to the Migration Service site, so have the application details ready when contacting the Service.
