Bangladesh is now a large source of Australian student visa applications. In the six months from 1 July to 31 December 2025, Bangladesh citizens lodged 10,502 student visa applications, up 86.7% from 5,624 in the same period of 2024-25, and Bangladesh ranks fourth among source countries in the Home Affairs report 1.
What the Home Affairs report shows
The figures below come from the Home Affairs student visa program report to 31 December 2025, which is the latest one used on this page 1.
For 1 July to 31 December 2025, Bangladesh citizens lodged 8,166 applications from outside Australia (up 80.8% from 4,517) and 2,336 from inside Australia (up 111.0% from 1,107) 1. In the same six months 8,454 student visas were granted to Bangladesh citizens (up 46.2% from 5,782), of which 6,549 went to applicants outside Australia (up 31.8% from 4,968) 1.
The grant rate is grants as a share of decisions. For Bangladesh applicants outside Australia it was 81.6% in October to December 2025. In the four quarters before that it was 95.7% (Oct-Dec 2024), 95.5% (Jan-Mar 2025), 97.7% (Apr-Jun 2025) and 97.8% (Jul-Sep 2025) 1. For all nationalities in October to December 2025, the grant rate was 80.7% overall and 83.8% for applicants outside Australia (84.9% and 90.0% a year earlier) 1. For Bangladesh applicants inside Australia the rate was 89.0% in October to December 2025 1.
For grants to Bangladesh citizens lodged and granted outside Australia in October to December 2025, the median time was 19 calendar days (25th percentile 12, 75th percentile 27). Earlier quarterly medians were 13 days (Oct-Dec 2024), 28 (Jan-Mar 2025), 21 (Apr-Jun 2025) and 10 (Jul-Sep 2025) 1.
Applying from Bangladesh
You apply online through ImmiAccount, and the Department of Home Affairs decides 2. The Australian High Commission in Dhaka says visa applications are managed by Home Affairs and its staff in Dhaka cannot assist with general visa enquiries 3. If Home Affairs asks for biometrics (photo and fingerprints), VFS Global collects them in Bangladesh, and VFS "do not make visa decisions" 3. The request comes as an official letter from Home Affairs 3.
Applications lodged outside Australia on or after 14 November 2025 are processed under Ministerial Direction 115, and earlier ones under Direction 111 2. Under these directions Home Affairs aims to start processing within 1 to 4 weeks of lodgement for Priority 1, 5 to 8 weeks for Priority 2 and 9 to 12 weeks for Priority 3 4. The priority is set at lodgement by your education provider's status, and it does not affect whether a visa is granted or refused 4. These aims are based on 2025 lodgements and can change 4.
The Genuine Student form
Since 23 March 2024, applicants answer Genuine Student questions in the application form, each in English and up to 150 words 5. They cover your ties to family, community, employment and economic circumstances, why you chose this course and provider, and how the course benefits you 5. Home Affairs gives more weight to statements backed by evidence, and says future intentions such as applying later for permanent residence do not count against you under this requirement 5.
Changes from 2 October 2026
New rules apply to applications lodged from 2 October 2026. They change who can apply and be granted a student visa while in Australia, and if you must apply from outside Australia you must also be outside Australia when the visa is granted 7. Student visa applicants can no longer include family members unless an exemption applies, such as PhD students, and family cannot be added after the grant 8.
Tracking and decisions
In ImmiAccount you can track the progress of your application and see requests for more information 6. A grant letter appears under Messages and shows the visa type, how long you can stay and whether you can work 3. A refusal appears there as an "IMMI Refusal Notification with Decision Record", which you should open and read 3. If an agent applies for you, they must let you see the application in ImmiAccount, and the High Commission says a refusal to do so is a sign of a scam 3.
Log in to the ImmiAccount you used to lodge, then use the status check above.
