Chile student residence from Bangladesh: SERMIG permit and MINREL status check
Last checked against official sources on
Chilean consulates do not accept residence visa applications. The Chilean consular pages say: "A partir del 12 de febrero de 2022 los Consulados de Chile NO reciben solicitudes de visa de residencia", and those go to the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG) 2. The Foreign Ministry (MINREL) online portal handles visas for stays under 90 days only 1. The Consulate of Chile in New Delhi covers Bangladesh: its page says "También tiene competencia sobre Nepal y Bangladesh" 3.
The student permit
Students apply for temporary residence (Residencia Temporal, student subcategory) with SERMIG. The application must be made from outside Chile through the Portal de Trámites Digitales, with an account or ClaveÚnica 4. The documents are:
- a passport valid at least one year from the application date
- a criminal record certificate from your country of origin or last 5 years of residence (if over 18), not more than 60 days old
- a recent colour photo on a white background (JPG or PNG)
- a Certificado de Alumno Regular or Certificado de Matrícula
- proof of means of support: bank deposits, periodic remittances, a notarised affidavit from a family provider in Chile, or a scholarship certificate
- foreign documents apostilled or legalised, with a certified translation if not in Spanish or English, all uploaded as PDF 4
Holders may work lawfully up to 30 hours a week without extra authorisation. An extension needs proof you are still enrolled in the same programme and have funds 4. The SERMIG student page states no processing time or fee, links to a separate fees page, and warns that inquiries may be delayed while the platform is updated 4.
Consular visas
On the New Delhi consulate page, a visa "toma varias semanas, pudiendo demorar hasta 6 meses" (takes several weeks and can take up to 6 months) 2.
Checking status on the MINREL portal
The portal has an option labelled "Ver estado solicitud de visa o autorización previa" 1. The official status page asks for three things 5:
- the validation code, which comes from your application email
- the ID type, chosen from Passport (P), RUN (Chilean ID) (R) or DNI (D)
- the ID number, which is your passport number if you chose Passport 5
It also asks you to type the characters from a security image (5 characters). A wrong entry gives a captcha error 5. If the Foreign Ministry's reply says it cannot find or does not recognise your data, no matching request was found 5.
Have the validation code from your application email and your passport number ready for the check above this article.
