Uruguay student visa for Bangladeshis: prior authorisation and waiting times
Last checked against official sources on
On this page
Bangladeshi citizens with an ordinary passport "Necesita Visa (5)", and footnote 5 reads "Necesita autorizacion previa", meaning prior authorisation is required. This comes from the Ministry of the Interior's visa table dated 19 August 2025 1.
How the application works
A visa is needed regardless of the length of stay, and study is one of the categories under Decree 356/2018 2. You contact the Uruguayan consulate nearest your place of residence 2. The consulate receives the application and tells you the documents to bring. The National Directorate of Migration (Direccion Nacional de Migracion) authorises it, and the consulate stamps the visa once it has that authorisation in writing 2. We did not find which consulate serves Bangladeshi applicants, or any Bangladesh-specific document list or fee.
Study visa documents
The only student visa procedure we could read is the one on the Uruguayan embassy in Sweden's page. It is a general procedure, not specific to Bangladesh 3. It describes a single-entry study visa (visa de estudio) with 30 days after arrival to start temporary residency 3. The documents are:
- a signed visa form and a passport photo
- a passport valid for 6 months
- an enrolment certificate on the institution's letterhead
- verified proof of income
- an apostilled police certificate
- the consular fee, about USD 54, and an interview with the Consul 3
The page warns that incomplete or unverifiable information, such as unconfirmed studies, may lead to denial 3.
How long it takes
The Foreign Ministry says authorisation usually takes at least 20 business days from the date of application 2. The Sweden page says the consulate can take up to 60 days to receive the authorisation 3. Neither is confirmed for Bangladesh applicants.
Temporary residence after arrival
Student temporary residence is granted for up to one year, renewable, and not beyond two years of the degree. It costs 557.30 UI, plus 55.70 UI for the migration certificate and 225.60 UI for the re-entry permit. You must show proof of enrolment and means of support. You apply online with a gub.uy login or in person by appointment. No processing time is stated 4.
Checking status
We found no online status check for Uruguay. Ask the consulate that took your application.
