Austria student residence permit: apply in person in New Delhi

For a study stay longer than 6 months, a student from Bangladesh applies for a Residence Permit - Student (in German, Aufenthaltsbewilligung - Studierender) in person at the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi 1. The embassy forwards the file to Austria, where the residence authority decides 13. The embassy says "In Bangladesh, Austria is represented by the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi, which is supported by the Austrian Honorary Consulate in Dhaka" 2.
The permit, then a visa D
A student can apply for the residence permit only in person, and most students use this route 3. Once the permit is granted, you apply for a visa D within 3 months of the notification and collect the permit in Austria within 6 months of the notification 3. The visa D is the entry visa for stays of 91 days to 6 months; a visa C covers up to 90 days 35. The decision period for the permit is 90 days, extended by another 90 days if more documents are needed, and OeAD advises applying at least 3 months before entry, preferably 6 months ahead 4. The consular fee for the residence application is EUR 218, paid in full at submission and not refunded if refused or withdrawn 74.
Money and documents
Proof of funds must cover 12 months in advance, in an account in your name that is accessible from Austria. The 2026 figures are EUR 722.58 a month under age 24 and EUR 1,308.39 a month from age 24, plus EUR 201.88 a month per child. The amount is higher if accommodation costs exceed EUR 386.43 a month 4. If parents or others pay, OeAD lists the sponsor's statements and employment proof, which means a contract and the last 6 payslips 4.
You also need a letter of admission (Zulassungsbescheid) from the Austrian institution, accommodation in Austria for at least 3 months, health insurance covering all risks, and a police clearance certificate not older than 3 months, legalised and translated 4. Documents must be legalised and, unless English is accepted, translated into German by a sworn translator 4. For entrance-examination cases the university issues a conditional notification of admission, and a visa D valid four months is issued to sit the exam 4.
Short stays and the visa window
The embassy checklist of August 2026 says a visa C or D can take up to 15 calendar days after the embassy receives the application, and up to 45 calendar days when further scrutiny is needed 6. Apply at least 1 month before travel; applications that reach the embassy less than 15 working days before travel are returned to VFS 6. The embassy page says to apply from 6 months to no later than 15 calendar days before departure, and warns of longer waits because of high demand 1. For stays up to 6 months, applications are lodged at a VFS application centre, and the embassy page does not name a Dhaka centre 1. VFS handles intake and passport return, but "all applications will continue to be assessed by the Austrian Embassy only" 1.
Things to know
Bangladesh is one of the countries whose nationals need a visa even for airport transit in Austria 1. You cannot apply for or renew a visa inside Austria 1. You may not work during a visa-free stay or on a visa C or D, unless the visa carries the "Erwerb" addendum 5. The embassy contacts you only by the email address and telephone number you give, so confirm both are correct 6. For residence permit questions, the embassy contact is NEW-DELHI-KA@bmeia.gv.at 1.
Have the email address you gave the embassy ready when you use the status check above, since the embassy writes to you there.
