Germany student visa in Dhaka: apply at the embassy, not VFS, and wait about 4 weeks

German student visa applications in Dhaka go through the embassy's own online appointment system. VFS Global Dhaka handles only short-stay Schengen visas, not student visas 13. The embassy will not give individual status updates during processing 1, so plan around the stated time instead.
How to apply
You book online with the legal and consular section of the German Embassy Dhaka, which decides the application 1. Applications are accepted only from people with permanent residence in the Embassy's jurisdiction. A Schengen and a National visa application cannot be processed at the same time. The visa is issued only within 3 months of your arrival date 1.
Pay the fee in BDT at submission. It is fixed in euro and not refunded if the visa is refused. Where documents need verification, a 35,000 BDT document verification charge applies 1. Students with publicly funded scholarships skip the National Visa fee but still pay the verification charge 1.
The visa and its documents
The visa is a German National visa (long stay) for study. The Embassy's June 2026 checklist lists 2:
- A passport issued within the last 10 years with at least two empty pages, one biometric photo not older than 6 months, the signed application form and declaration, and a copy of the passport data page on A4.
- Proof of admission, plus a scholarship or PhD letter if it applies.
- For English-taught programmes, proof of English such as TOEFL or IELTS, unless your Bachelor's was completed in Australia, the UK or the US.
- For German-taught programmes, proof of German. Zertifikat B1 "good" or higher is recommended.
- Your Higher Secondary Education Board certificate and mark-sheets, and your Bachelor or Master transcripts.
- A letter of motivation answering the Embassy's listed questions, and a CV.
- Travel health insurance valid from arrival until enrolment, for at least 3 months.
- Proof of financial means.
For funds you can use scholarship confirmation, a formal sponsorship letter (Verpflichtungserklaerung), or a blocked account (Sperrkonto) in your own name. The checklist sets the blocked account at a minimum balance of EUR 11,904 with monthly access of EUR 992 2. Only scholarships funded by the German Government or EU funds count as qualifying scholarships for the student route 2.
How long it takes and what happens after
The Embassy gives 4 weeks for students, including preparatory language courses. The clock starts when the application reaches the mission and is complete 1. The June 2026 checklist says a minimum of about 4 weeks 2.
After a decision, direct applicants are informed by mail with an appointment to collect the passport. VFS applicants are informed by VFS or have the passport posted 1.
Dhaka Schengen numbers, not student numbers
The EU figures for the German consulate in Dhaka in 2024 are for short-stay Schengen (type C) visas of all purposes. They do not cover long-stay student visas, and the row may include other states the consulate represents, such as Estonia. 5,933 were applied for, 3,303 issued and 2,539 not issued, a not-issued share of about 43% 4. The Embassy publishes no student-visa figures, and no refusal-reason list was found.
Keep your appointment confirmation and the date you filed, since the 4 weeks run from a complete file.
