On this page
The Directorate of Immigration (Utlendingastofnun) processes student permit applications that have every document in by the deadline before the school term starts. Its 2025 news item gave 1 June as the autumn deadline 2.
Who decides and the rule on where you are
The Directorate of Immigration, in Kopavogur, handles the residence permit for studies 1. No Iceland visa centre in Dhaka was found 1. If you need a visa to travel to Iceland, you must not be in Iceland when you submit or while the application is processed. Applications that break this rule are rejected 1.
What you need to qualify
You must be 18 or older, unless you are an exchange student, and enrolled full time, which means 30 ECTS per semester 4. You must show your own money of at least 259.951 ISK per month before tax, and it must last for the whole permit period. Cash and most social assistance do not count 4. Health insurance must be valid in Iceland, cover at least three months from when your legal domicile is registered, and have at least ISK 2,000,000 of cover 4.
The documents are your passport, the insurance certificate, a letter from your school confirming full-time enrolment, proof of funds such as bank balances, and application form D-108 4. The Directorate may also obtain your tax returns 4. The requirements page gives no fee.
How long it takes
In 2025 the average for approved first-time student permits was 2.5 months. The Directorate says the exact time cannot be predicted 1. This is 2025 data and is not specific to Bangladesh.
Following your place in the queue
The Directorate has a waiting-time page that shows which applications are being processed, based on submission date. No login is needed 13. Nothing is given by phone, email or web chat while you wait 1, so use that page.
Note your submission date before you open the waiting-time page, because the queue is arranged by it.
